Riddarholmen

Lokaler Name: Riddarholmen

A small island belonging to the historic district of Gamla stan in the center of Stockholm, also known as the Knights' Island. There is a Lutheran church here, the burial place of Swedish rulers and having the status of a sacred monument. On Riddarholmen, we can also admire private 17th-century palaces or a statue of the city's founder: Jarl Birger.

The destiny of the island has changed over the centuries. Initially, goats were grazed here in the 13th century, later Riddarholmen became the site of the Franciscan abbey, and it acquired its present name and present function only in 1638 as a result of changes after the Reformation.

Riddarholmen is the perfect place to not only relax, but also learn about the city's history. Here you will find the historic parliament building or the old national archive, as well as restaurants, hotels and cafes overlooking Riddarfjärden Bay.
