Kościuszko Square is the focal point of the city. In the past, it was also a place of important public gatherings and various celebrations, it also fulfilled commercial functions. Its central point is the first monument erected in Tomaszów Mazowiecki - the monument to Tadeusz Kościuszko from 1918. The square is surrounded by historic tenement houses, among others. Knothe's tenement house, where the seat of the District Court was located.
The square, until 1917 named the St. Józefa, was established at the beginning of the 19th century as a trade fair and communication hub. For many years, for example, a car park operated here, and a bit later buses and taxis.
In 2016, Kościuszko Square took first place in the Polish Town Planners competition for the best developed public space in the Lodzkie Voivodship in the "Revitalized public space" category.
