St. John the Evangelist in Kwidzyn was built in the 14th century in the Gothic style. It was part of a complex of buildings connected with a fortified castle. It had a defensive character, which was given by a high belfry, which is also an observation tower, two massive stair towers and a cloister.
The church is 86 m long and 25 m wide, and its belfry is 59 m high. On the southern façade, you can see a mosaic depicting the martyrdom of St. John the Evangelist, dated 1380. Inside the temple, there is a collection of Gothic wall paintings from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, restored in the 19th and 20th centuries.
During the visit, it is also worth paying attention to the gothic tombstones. Since 2010, the renovated crypt of the great masters of the Teutonic Order has been opened to the public. They were buried here, among others Werner von Orseln, Ludolf König and Heinrich von Plauen.
