The fortress is built on the highest point of the hill overlooking the city. From the outside, it has the form of two smaller fortresses connected with each other. The first, southern part was built by order of the Duke of Athens, who was appointed governor of Florence in 1342. The fortress is now used as a maximum security prison. Noteworthy is the part that serves as a restaurant manned by properly supervised inmates.
