Kathedrale von Santa Maria Matricolare

Lokaler Name: Cattedrale di Verona

The historic cathedral was built in the first half of the 11th century on the site of the previous temple, dating back to the 8th century and destroyed by an earthquake. Its architecture is dominated by the Romanesque style, although you can see Baroque ornaments added in the 17th century. In turn, the interior is decorated in the Gothic style, and the presbytery has Renaissance influences.

Adjacent to the cathedral is a Romanesque-Renaissance belfry, built between the 12th and 13th centuries. It is 74 m high and is the second tallest building in the city. There is a belfry with ten bells at its top.

The interior of the temple is divided by high pilasters of red marble into a spacious nave and two aisles. In each of them there are four small chapels with altars. They are decorated with Renaissance works of art by artists mainly from Verona.
