Insel Lazzaretto Nuovo

Lokaler Name: Isola del Lazzaretto Nuovo

At the end of the 11th century, the island became the property of the Benedictine order, who erected a church of St. Bartholomew. Due to the fact that the island was surrounded by brines, it became an important salt producing center in the region. In 1468 a hospital was established here, whose task was to prevent outbreaks of various epidemics. The island became a quarantine place for ships whose crew members could be carriers of the disease.

Over time, hospital buildings ceased to fulfill their original function, and in the Napoleonic times became part of the lagoon's defense system. The Italian army was stationed on the island until 1975, after which it left the island. Lazzaretto Nuovo is one of the few islands in the Venetian lagoon that undergoes such strong recovery processes.

The summer archaeological camps organized here contribute to a large extent to the fact that the island is a place of many educational, research and scientific initiatives. Currently, it is part of the municipal scientific circuit - belongs to the Library System of the Museum of the Province of Venice. He also participates in the Educational Programs of the City of Venice.
