The church dates back to the 6th century and stands in an area where there was a temple, theater and baths during the ancient Roman period. In the 11th-12th centuries, the church was rebuilt in the Romanesque style. In 1768 it was demolished and rebuilt in the neoclassical style, only the crypt of the previous building remained.
