The church is the oldest cathedral in Puglia, initially dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene and then to the Bishop of St. Cataldo. The facility was built by the Byzantines in the second half of the 10th century. In the last years of the 11th century, the Byzantine structure was rebuilt and the cathedral was given its present shape.
