The main Pienza square was designed on the order of Pope Pius II in the mid-15th century. It is surrounded by early-Renaissance buildings by Bernardo Rossellino. The main building of the square is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which resembles Franciscan monasteries. The remaining frontages of the trapezoidal square are built up with palaces, which include, among others, diocesan museum.
