Paläologisches Schloss

The castle was built around the mid-fourteenth century by order of Giovanni II Paleologo, Marquis of Monferrato. In the mid-nineteenth century, the building was fortified in anticipation of the war with Austria, and the castle was incorporated into the defensive structure. Later, some of the buildings were demolished, thus enabling the creation of a large public space, the present Piazza Castello.
