The residence was previously inhabited by Eliza Bonaparte, one of the three sisters of Emperor Napoleon I - the palace owes her the name Reale (Royal) and its present appearance. The baroque building is surrounded by a vast park with classicist churches, a 17th-century green theater (made of a yew hedge) and magnificent fountains.
