The small square is in the center of the Castello district and has remained almost unchanged since the Middle Ages. Formerly, noblemen sentenced to death were beheaded here. On the eastern side of the square there is a marble slab decorated with the coat of arms of the city, the work of the sculptor Scipione Aprile, and in the center of the square there is a statue of St. Francis of Assisi.
