FAI - Castello di Avio

The medieval castle was built in the 11th century. It is one of the oldest fortifications in the province of Trento. It consists of a baroque palace surrounded by smaller buildings and five huge towers, including one for executions. The whole was protected by three rows of defensive walls.

Some of the castle rooms are decorated with well-preserved medieval frescoes. They are divided into two cycles. The first is called "Chamber of love", located on the top floor of one of the towers. The frescoes date from 1330 and are one of the few examples of secular wall painting from this period. They show allegorical scenes with Cupid hunting his lover and love scenes. The second series was created around 1350 and shows knights and battle scenes.
