Sligo Abbey

Lokaler Name: Mainistir Shligigh

Sligo Abbey is in the city center. These are the ruins of a former Dominican monastery. Only the walls and the church tower are left of them. Inside the ruins, you can see the carved tombstones of many of the area's prominent residents.

The monastery was founded in the mid-13th century by Maurice Fitzgerald. In 1414, it was destroyed by a fire. In later centuries, it fell victim to invasions several times. In the end, in the 17th century, it was decided not to rebuild it. Today, the ruins are a reminder of the monastic past of this place. Most of all, a roofless church with a square tower has been preserved here. Inside, you can still see pillars separating the aisles, tall windows, and above all, a large amount of good-class stonework. There are grave sculptures, floral ornaments with which the corners and brackets were decorated. The abbey was featured by Yeats in two of his short stories, The Crucifixion of the Outcast and The Curse of the Fires and of the Shadows.
