Carrigaholt Schloss

Carrigaholt Castle is located at the mouth of the River Shannon to the sea. These are the ruins of a 15th-century residential tower surrounded by a wall. Currently, you can enter the castle grounds, but the entrance to the tower itself is closed due to the possibility of falling from a great height.

The castle was built around 1480 by the MacMahon family. It was inhabited until the second half of the 19th century. Since then, it has fallen into disrepair. A ruined tower surrounded by a high stone wall has survived to our times. In its corners there are semicircular bartizans used as arrowslits. In the past, the castle defended the entrance to the Shannon River Estuary and the Limerick Harbor.

According to local legends, the picturesque ruins are haunted by the spirit of the Crab Clare and his army of horse riders called yellow dragoons. They are to appear on walls on moonlit nights.
