The Cappoquin estate belongs to the Kean family, the Baronets of Belmont. It is a two-hectare garden surrounding the house from the end of the 18th century. The gardens were largely established in the 20th century, but with the use of older, 19th-century elements.
According to records, the Fitzgerald Castle was located in the place that today occupies the Cappoquin estate. It was destroyed during the wars with Cromwell's troops in the 17th century and no traces of it have survived today. The present manor was built in 1779. The author of the design was John Roberts, a well-known architect working in the County of Waterford.
The neoclassical building topped with an attic is covered with wild wine. The interiors are open to visitors only a few times a year. However, you can visit the gardens surrounding the house. Rhododendrons, magnolias, ornamental vines and shrubs form picturesque, multicolored clusters here. In the gardens you can find wild nooks with benches and extensive lawns surrounded by flower beds.
