Grianan aus Aileach

Lokaler Name: Grianán Ailigh

Grianan of Aileach is located in Burt in County Donegal, Ireland. The structure, resembling a flat cake, is in fact a prehistoric stone fort, attracting visitors not only with its interesting shape, but also with a unique story about the past.

The fort was built around 1700 BC, so in the Bronze Age. Unfortunately, its original walls have not survived to our times - it was destroyed in 1101 by the troops of Murtagh O'Brien, king of Munster. In the nineteenth century, it was decided to restore the building and today we can admire the reconstructed defensive walls that surround the interior of the fort.

In its heyday, the Grianan of Aileach played an important cultural and political role - between the 8th century BC and the 12th century AD, it served the early Irish rulers.
