St. Patrick's Cathedral Muredach

Lokaler Name: St Muiredach's Cathedral

Saint Muredach's Cathedral in Ballina is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Killala. It stands on the banks of the River Moy. It is a neo-gothic, single-nave building with a transept and a square tower topped with a tall spire.

The cathedral was built in the years 1827-1840. The tower was completed in 1855. It represents an architectural style typical of that period. It is a stone structure built on a cross plan. A square tower with buttresses and a high, slightly bent spire adjoins the nave from the fragile side.

The interior is covered with a cross-ribbed vault supported by polygonal pillars. It is painted in bright colors. In the windows there are neo-Gothic stained glass windows depicting scenes from the Holy Bible. The equipment is modest. It is limited to a stone altar with neo-Gothic decorations and a few paintings with religious scenes from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
