Stadion des Epidaurus

The ancient stadium is part of the Sanctuary of Asclepius. Sports competitions in honor of this deity were regularly held there. The remains of stone seats, tracks and starting pillars have survived to the present day.

The history of the stadium dates back to the beginning of the 5th century BC. Clay seats and small pebbles, found under visible stone benches, are dated to this period. The latter were built around the 3rd century BC. They were placed along the longer sides and on the eastern side of the stadium.

The treadmill used during sports competitions was 181 m long. The tracks were divided into 6 equal parts. On the northern part of the stadium, there was an underground passage that connected the race track with the arena where the athletes trained.
