Platz der Republik

Lokaler Name: Place de la République

The Paris Square of the Republic is a representative square measuring 283 mx 119 m. The square has a commercial character, with numerous department stores. In its center there is a bronze statue of Marianne with an olive branch in her hand, the personification of the French Republic. The height of the monument is 23 meters.

In the past, in the area of today's Republic Square, there was a bastion of the Temple Gate, which was part of the 14th-century defensive walls erected during the reign of Charles V. The present-day square was founded in 1811 and was originally called Château-d'Eau. There was a fountain in the middle of it.

The square of the Republic owes its present form to the great reconstruction of Paris, during which it was significantly enlarged. The square received its present name after the proclamation of the Third Republic. In 1879, a competition was announced for the design of an allegorical monument to the Republic, won by the brothers Leopold and Charles Morice. The monument replaced the fountain, which was moved to the 12th district.
