The monument from the time of Roman rule was erected at the turn of 7 and 6 BC to commemorate the triumph of Emperor Augustus over the Alpine tribes. Originally, the building was 50 m high and 33 m in circumference and in the form of a monopter (a colonnade set on a circular plan, covered with a roof). The whole was crowned with a statue of Augustus, which has not survived.
