LINCOLN достопримечательности

+1 самые интересные места

Lincoln is a historic city known for its magnificent Gothic cathedral and Norman castle. There are also several interesting museums, including the famous The Collection considered to be one of the best English museums outside London.

The city is considered one of the first centers in England. A Roman settlement here was founded in 48 AD and developed over the next almost 3 centuries. The arch in the center, which is the former gate, comes from the 3rd century AD. Items found during excavations in the city are on display at The Collection.

The most important attractions of Lincoln are related to its medieval history. In the 12th century, the local cathedral was erected on the site of an earlier Romanesque temple. It is a great example of English Gothic, and its interiors are known, among others from the movie The Da Vinci Code. A small Old Town with historic houses stretches around the cathedral. Many have stone facades with Gothic and Renaissance window framing, but you can also see the characteristic Elizabethan black and white frame houses.

Above the buildings of the city, the walls of the Normandy Lincoln Castle are visible. One of the four copies of the Great Charter of Freedoms is kept within its walls. The area of the castle is open to tourists, and it is connected with the Old Town by a route leading through a massive Gothic gate. Next to the castle, there is a neo-gothic water tower visible from a distance.

In addition to the award-winning The Collection with huge collections on the history and art of the entire county in Lincoln, there is also the Museum of Everyday Life, where you can see how the inhabitants of the city and its surroundings lived centuries ago, and the Bombing Command Center - a modern facility combining museum exhibitions with a place memory. It is dedicated to the command of the bombing forces, which had their headquarters in this area during the Second World War.
