Lancaster is a historic city founded during the Norman invasion and boasts a perfectly preserved medieval castle. It went down in the history of England because of a very strict court and witchcraft trials conducted here.

It is known from archaeological excavations that in the first century AD there was a military camp in the place where the Lancaster Castle stands. There are few traces of it, but on the hill you can see, among others ruins of baths and barracks.

The city was founded by the Normans at the end of the 11th century. It was then that the construction of the local castle and the parish church began. The castle was later expanded during the reign of Elizabeth I and today it is one of the best examples of a defensive structure in the late Gothic style in England.

The parish church of St. Mary is next to the castle the oldest monument in Lancaster. Its construction began on the site of a Roman temple at the end of the 11th century. The early-Gothic interior is covered with a wooden ceiling and decorated with magnificent stained glass windows.

Lancaster's attraction is the expansive Williamson Park, one of the city's favorite recreational spots. There are numerous alleys, a swimming pond and a butterfly house made of metal and glass.
