Stora Sundby Castle

The Castle of Stora Sundby is a vast estate on Lake Hjälmaren. Its history dates back to the second half of the 16th century, and the present appearance is the result of a thorough reconstruction, which was carried out in the years 1831-1848. It was commissioned by Count Carl de Geer, who wanted a castle in the Old Norman style, in the atmosphere of a Sir Walter Scott novel.

An interesting fact is the symbolic references of the castle's architecture and design to the calendar. The four towers symbolize the seasons, the twelve smaller turrets represent the months, and the 52 rooms represent the weeks. The façade is also decorated with 365 windows, which is the number of days in a year.

In the vicinity of the castle there are restored farm buildings in the Empire style. They include: a 50-meter orangery, bathhouses and breweries, stables, coach houses and the inspector's manor house.
