The pass is one of the most popular and lowest roads of this type in the Alps. The location at an altitude of 2,108 meters above sea level means that the pass can be crossed at any time of the year. In 1882 a railway line was commissioned, which includes 18 tunnels. Another important event was the opening of the longest Gotthard-Basistunnel in the world in 2016.
