The Orthodox monastery was built in 1406-1418. Currently, the complex includes an Orthodox church, a spacious refectory and monastery buildings with cells for monks. The whole is surrounded by huge walls, which are additionally reinforced with 11 defensive towers. The monastery has the status of a national monument of exceptional importance. In 2010, it was entered on the UNESCO Tentative List.
In the temple, historic frescoes from the end of the fourteenth century and the beginning of the fifteenth century have been preserved. scenes of receiving Communion by the apostles, figures of prophets, Assumption of the Mother of God and miracles performed by Christ. You can also see the image of the founder of the monastery, the Serbian prince and Despot, Stefan IV Lazarevic.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, the monastery was one of the main centers of Serbian culture. Books were translated and copied there even during the Ottoman conquests. In the 15th century, the monastery was attacked and destroyed several times. Its present appearance is the result of reconstruction in the mid-nineteenth century.
