The National Museum of the Union is located in the historic city of Alba Iulia and is dedicated to archeology, history, ethnography and the arts. The archaeological collection includes pottery, tools and weapons, ornaments and sculptures from prehistory, antiquity and the Middle Ages, respectively. Among them there are finds, incl. from the old Dak fortresses of Craiva, Cugir and Căpâlna and the Roman city center of Apulum.
Historical collections include collections of folk art, including textiles, ceramics, icons painted on wood and glass, and everyday tools and objects, as well as collections of documents, photographs and numismatic exhibitions.
The museum is housed in two historic buildings. The first was built in the mid-nineteenth century in a romantic style as a residential pavilion for officers. The second one comes from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and initially served as a military casino.
