The museum is one of the oldest private objects of this type established in Italy. It was founded in 1869 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. It collects masterpieces by Duccio di Buoninsegna, sculptures by Giovanni Pisano, Donatello and Jacopo della Quercia, precious fabrics, jewelry and manuscripts.
