Ercolano is a city that is, above all, an excellent starting point for people who want to explore the vicinity of the famous volcano Vesuvius. There is also an important archaeological site covering the ancient city of Herculaneum .
In the ancient times, Ercolano was a place of rest for the aristocracy due to its proximity to Naples and its location near the coast. The most important families had their villas here, such as Willa Favorita and Willa Campolieto . The city of Herculaneum, whose ruins are today one of the main attractions of Ercolano, was destroyed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Today, you can see an extensive archaeological site with a theater, thermal baths, remains of residential houses and the House of Papyrus, where scrolls of the writings of ancient philosophers were discovered.
Ercolano's attractions also include the nearby Vesuvius and the Vesuvius National Park that covers it. You can take a trip to the top of the volcano and the observation decks, which allow you to admire the wonderful views of the Bay of Naples.
