It is one of the oldest Marian sanctuaries in Europe - according to legend, it was built by Constantine in the 4th century in the place where the former Roman grandstand of Sant 'Eustachio had converted. The complex rises on a rocky bluff at an altitude of 1018 meters. A figure of the Mother of God with the Baby Jesus, dating from the 11th-12th centuries, is venerated here.
