The sanctuary is dedicated to the cult of St. Gerard Majella (1726-1755), a Redemptorist who died here at the age of only 29. In the center of the hall of the present basilica (the previous one was destroyed by an earthquake in 1980) there is a crystal urn with the saint's mortal remains.
