The church was built in 1615 in the late Renaissance style. It was erected on the site of the alleged birthplace of St. Francis, house of Pietro di Bernardone. The church was built under the supervision of Brother Rufino di Cerchiara, who was perhaps also its architect. The temple is decorated with frescoes by Cesare Sermei and Giacomo Giorgetti.
