The National Library of Catalonia is the largest collection of works related to the history, culture and language of the region. It is located in the medieval buildings of the Hospital of the Holy Cross. In addition to traditional written collections, it also has a large digital library.
The library was established in 1914. Its official opening to the public, however, took place only in 1940, after the end of the civil war. Previously, it was located in the Palace of the Generalitat, where the collections were made available only to a small group of scientists.
The building of the library is the oldest, gothic part of the Holy Cross Hospital. There is a reading room in the refectory, where you can admire the cross-ribbed vault. The library conducts extensive research activities. He also participates in the digitization of collections related to Catalonia. It collaborates with other libraries in the region, such as the Montserrat Monastery Library.
