Kylemore Abbey

Kylemore Abbey is a Benedictine nunnery founded on the grounds of Kylemore Castle. Currently, the facility is open to tourists. As part of the tour, you can see the abbey itself, as well as the neo-Gothic church and Ireland's largest Victorian walled gardens. The restored Gardener's House and Gazebo offer a glimpse into Victorian Era life. There is also a handicraft shop, a pottery workshop, and a restaurant and tea room serving homemade food.

Kylemore Castle was built in the second half of the 19th century. Its facade is 142 meters wide and is made of granite brought from Dalkey. There are over 70 rooms, including a ballroom, a billiard room and a library. In 1920, the property was bought by the Irish Benedictine nuns. It was mainly inhabited by sisters who fled during World War I from the monastery in Ypres in Belgium. Soon an international boarding school for girls was opened here, which operated until 2010.
