Kilkenny Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Ossory. It is a majestic, neo-Gothic building with a tower located above the intersection of the naves and the transept. Inside, you can admire the intricate stonework decorations and a statue of the Madonna by Giovanni Maria Benzoni.
The cathedral was built between 1843 and 1857. It was designed by the English architect William Deane Butler. It was modeled on the Gloucester Cathedral in Great Britain. The appearance of the building is described as imitation of the early English Gothic.
The church is a three-nave church built on the plan of an elongated cross. Above the intersection of the nave and the transept there is a square tower with a flat roof and soaring turrets in the corners. Similar turrets decorate the ends of the transept. The presbytery is closed with polygons. The interior of the cathedral is finished with stone carvings.
