Glendalough Monastic Site

Локальное имя: Glendalough Monastic Site

The Glendalough Monastic Site is the remains of an early Christian monastic settlement founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century. It is known as the "monastic city". Most of the buildings that have survived to this day date from the 10th to 12th centuries. There are, among others a round tower, seven churches, two high crosses, a cemetery and a hermitage. Nearby, there is an interactive center with audiovisual equipment and a model of the monastery complex.

Despite Viking attacks over the years, Glendalough flourished as one of Ireland's great church foundations and schools of learning until the Normans destroyed the monastery in 1214. The settlement itself was destroyed by English forces in 1398. The reconstruction program began in the second half of the 19th century and today the valley boasts a modern visitor center, forest trails and climbing areas.
