Spanish Arch

Локальное имя: Spanish Arch

The Spanish Arch and the adjacent Caoċ Arch are two arches that are remnants of the Ceann an Bhalla wall. They were part of the city walls, extending from the Martin Tower on the bank of the Corrib River and protecting the city's waterfront. In the place where they are standing, there used to be the so-called Fish Market, now the Spanish Parade.

In the 18th century, the Eyrecourt family built a promenade called The Long Walk and its arches, then known as the Eyre Arch. Only later did the term "Spanish" appear. In 1755, the arches were partially destroyed by the tsunami caused by the Lisbon earthquake.

Until 2006, it housed the Galway City Museum, but it was moved to a new building just outside the Arch.
