Dublin's Sandymount Beach stretches for approximately one kilometer and is a popular leisure destination. Locals and tourists come here for walks, as well as jogging and water sports. The area is also important from a natural point of view as a habitat for various bird species.
The promenade along the beach was built in the 1960s and 1970s and has been renovated several times since then. In 2002, a sculpture by the Mexican artist Sebastián entitled "An Cailín Bán", or "Waiting for the Sailor", was placed here. About 6 meters high, the sculpture has a modern character and abstract shape.
The historic Martello Tower, a kind of massive fortification from the Napoleonic Wars period, is also located on Sandymount Beach. It was built in 1804, and in later periods it was the seat of a cafe and the Dublin Tram Enterprise.
