Richmond Barracks

Локальное имя: Richmond Barracks

The Richmond Barracks are located in the Inchicore district of Dublin. Throughout their history, they served as barracks, prisons and schools. In 2016, an interactive museum was opened within their walls, showing the fate of this place from 1800 to the present day.

The barracks were built in 1800 and British troops were stationed here until 1814. Local Irish squadrons were also grouped here during World War I. In the meantime, the building was used as a prison where mostly members of the independence movement were held. After the Easter Rising, its participants, including women, were brought here. After World War II, the barracks were turned into apartments, and in 1970 a boarding house and St. Michael's school moved in here. In 2016, on the 100th anniversary of the Easter uprising, a museum was opened showing the history of this place.

The museum shows the history of the barracks through the prism of specific people who were associated with them. You can hear the story of the Easter Rising and the 77 women who were imprisoned in Richmond after it ended. A separate exhibition shows what the life of the families living here was like after the Second World War. We also managed to recreate the appearance of the school class and the boarding school of St. Michael's school. The museum organizes workshops and meetings for children and adults.
