Howth Lighthouse

Локальное имя: Howth Lighthouse

Howth Harbor Lighthouse is a lighthouse located on the Howth Head Peninsula, at the northern end of Dublin Bay. It was established in 1818.

The lighthouse tower is nearly 15 meters high. In the back there is a Georgian lighthouse keeper's house. The circular wall surrounding the lighthouse suggests that the building was used for defensive purposes, as well as other buildings from the same era that are nearby (including the Martello tower). Due to the lack of financial resources and little usefulness for the port, the lighthouse was electrified only after World War II. It operated until 1982.

The lighthouse has witnessed historical events. In 1914, writer Robert Erskine Childers, author of the novel "The Mystery of the Sandbanks," smuggled weapons for Irish revolutionaries on his yacht. He was just unloading it at the lantern. He was executed in the Civil War.
