Bunratty Castle is a large 15th-century knight's tower, now open to the public. The interiors and furnishings, such as furniture, tapestries and works of art, show the condition at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The property is famous for its medieval banquets, organized since 1963. The adjoining Bunratty Folk Park is an open-air museum with around 30 buildings, including the Ardcroney Church Of Ireland.
The castle was built by the MacNamara clan around 1425. It changed owners several times in the following centuries. It was used until the end of the 19th century, when the roof of the Great Hall collapsed. The restored castle was opened to the public in 1960.
The first settlement in this place was probably a trade camp established by the Vikings. According to local tradition, it was situated on a hill southwest of the present castle. However, no remains of this settlement have been found, so its exact location is unknown and its existence has not been proven.
