Velké Březno is a village on the Elbe, the most important monument of which is the neo-Gothic chateau that belonged to the Chotek family in the past. There is also a brewery open to the public.
The town was founded in the Middle Ages and was associated with the local castle as its servant settlement. In the 19th century, the property was bought by Count Karel Chotek. His daughter was the future wife of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was murdered with him in Sarajevo in 1914.
Chotek rebuilt a dilapidated old castle, but built a new residence for his family, the neo-Gothic Velké Březno Castle. It is surrounded by picturesque gardens and a landscape park, and the interior is now open to the public.
Another attraction of Velké Březno is the historic Březňák brewery with its hiking trail. It is also possible to taste regional beers. In the village, you can also see the rebuilt Gothic-Renaissance church of St. Wacław and the neo-Gothic tomb of the Chotek family.
The attraction of the area is the Zubrnice open-air museum, which can be reached by a historic train, and numerous elements of the Czechoslovakian fortifications from before the Second World War, preserved on the hills.
