Chlumec nad Cidlinou is a historic town known primarily for the baroque Karlova Koruna palace.

In the past, it was primarily a commercial center on the busy route from Hradec Králové towards Prague. From the 15th century, large-scale fish ponds began to appear here, which provided income for the local population. Some of them have survived to this day.

In the history of Bohemia, Chlumec nad Cidlinou is known primarily from the battle between the imperial army and rebellious peasants in 1775. Hence the Czech saying "they fell like peasants near Chlumec".

The biggest attraction of Chlumec nad Cidlinou is the baroque Karlova Koruna Castle. It is built on a royal crown plan and is surrounded by French gardens and an English-style park. In the park, you can also see the baroque chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the mid-18th century.

In addition to the palace in the city, there is also an interesting Gothic-Renaissance church of St. Ursula from the mid-16th century and a Baroque Marian column. You can learn about the history of Chlumca in the City Museum located in the Loreta building. The oldest part of the city is full of greenery, so Chlumec is often called the city of gardens.
