Silistra is a quiet town situated on the bank of the Danube. Already in Roman times, there was a fortified fort here, the remains of which are among the most important attractions of the city.

In the 1st century Mark Aurelius founded the Durostorum military camp on the site of the former Thracian settlement. Soon a city grew around it, and the fortress developed into one of the most important defense points in this part of Thrace. The fortifications were expanded in the following centuries, and today the ruins of the Durostorum-Drastar Fortress are among the main attractions of Silistry. Another interesting monument of the city also comes from Roman times, a Roman tomb decorated with murals.

During the Turkish rule over Silistra, further fortifications were built. They have been preserved in good condition to this day. The Medzhidi Tabiya Fortress stands on a hill with a beautiful view of the surrounding area. The history of the city and its military past can be found in the Museum of Regional History.

The proximity of the Danube makes Silistra a lot of green and recreational areas. The most important of them is the Danube Park located in the vicinity of the Roman fortress. There are walking paths, picnic areas, as well as water bird watching spots.
