Puente de Älvsborgs

Nombre local: Älvsborgsbron

The Älvsborgs suspension bridge over the Göta älv river in Gothenburg connects the northern and southern parts of the city. It was built in 1966 according to the design of the architect Sven Olof Asplund. When it was put into operation, it was the largest bridge in the country. Its total length is 933 m, and the main span is 417 m. The road rises 45 m above the water level, and the pylons are 107 m high.

As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that on the occasion of the World Championships in Athletics, which took place in Gothenburg in 1995, the bridge was painted green. Work had already started two years earlier, and 36,000 liters of paint were used to completely repaint the bridge. In 2005-2006, the bridge became the finish line of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The bridge is designed for car, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. There is a 6-lane road, a bicycle path and a footpath running through it.
