Fortaleza campesina

Nombre local: Cetatea Țărănească

The peasant fortress, located near the town of Sashiz, was built on a plateau 681.5 m high. Its history dates back to the mid-fourteenth century. It was a Saxon fortress erected as a shelter for local residents during invasions. It was also used as a food store.

The fortress was built on an irregular polygon plan. It is 90 m long at its longest and 52 m at the widest point. It is surrounded by huge 10 m walls, additionally reinforced with six towers. There was a fountain inside the fortress, which - according to local legend - was connected by an underground tunnel with a nearby fortified church.

The local Saxon community took care of keeping the fortress in good condition. In 1940, by order of Hitler, they were relocated to Germany, and the fortress began to gradually fall into disrepair. The inhabitants themselves contributed to this and used it as a source of building materials.
