The well-preserved citadel enjoys a never-conquered reputation as a fortress. Tourists visiting it can admire centuries-old fortifications, historic chambers, as well as valuable exhibits inside. Inside the fortress, relics from various periods are displayed, including weapons, furniture and works of sacred art.
The Făgărawierdz Fortress was built at the beginning of the 14th century. Its main task was to protect the areas of south-eastern Transylvania. In the following centuries, it was expanded many times - the building was surrounded by a moat, and the chambers were given a representative character.
In 1939, the building was a place for the internment of Polish soldiers in exile. From the end of World War II to 1960, the communist authorities of Romania used the fortress buildings as a prison for political opponents and oppositionists.
