Nelahozeves is the town where the famous Czech composer Antonin Dworak was born. There is also one of the most magnificent Renaissance castles in the Czech Republic.
The town has been mentioned in sources since the 14th century and was initially primarily an agricultural and craft settlement. Its importance increased in the 16th century, when one of the advisers to Emperor Ferdinand I decided to build his residence here.
Nelahozeves Castle is the greatest attraction of the area and one of the leading achievements of the Renaissance in the Czech Republic. It has survived to our times in perfect condition. It happened mainly thanks to its centuries-old owners, the Lobkowicz family, belonging to the leading Czech aristocratic families.
The palace has retained its Renaissance body with magnificent sgraffito decorations, while the interiors are mostly decorated in the style of the 18th and 19th centuries. There is a museum here presenting the life of the nobility in the 19th century. There are works in it, incl. Brueghel, Velázquez, Rubens and Cranach.
The house where Antonin Dworak, one of the leading Czech composers, was born and lived until the age of 13, is located on the site of the former outer ward. There is now a small biographical museum devoted to him in this building.
