Skierniewice is a city that for centuries was the property of the archbishops of Gniezno. They built their palace here, where they spent a large part of the year. Today, in addition to the residence, an important monument of the city is also a locomotive shed with a railway exhibition.
The city was founded in the mid-15th century and from the very beginning belonged to the property of the archbishopric of Gniezno. Already in the Middle Ages, the first bishop's castle and a church were built here, where masses with the participation of archbishops were held. In the 17th century, they were destroyed during the wars with the Swedes.
The period of the greatest prosperity in Skierniewice was in the Saxon times. After the death of August II and the escape of Stanisław Leszczyński, the primate ruled the country as an interrex. As a result, Skierniewice, where he was in office, was promoted to the rank of "the second capital". In the 17th and 18th centuries, a new Primate's Palace was built in the classicist style. It is surrounded by extensive gardens, and the monumental Park Gate leads to the property.
An interesting attraction of the city is the Skierniewice Steam Locomotive Shed, built in the mid-19th century. You can see about 100 locomotives, wagons, rail vehicles, as well as a manual railway station, a forge and a repair shop.
