The market square, laid out in medieval times, is the focal point of the entire city. Within it, there are many historic structures as well as modern service points and restaurants.
As part of the market modernization carried out in 2014, the historic appearance of the place was partially restored - with a paved surface and a well. An illuminated fountain and benches with plaques containing information about the history of the city have been added. A glass plate was installed over the preserved fragments of the walls of the 16th-century town hall. On the market square, you can also see the site of a German bunker from the Second World War.
In the past, the Oświęcim market square was surrounded by wooden architecture. The modern buildings, however, mostly consist of tenement houses built in the 19th century.
